Making Stuff

I make sculpture, structure, installation and painting informed by architectural forms and processes. I am interested in the way people form emotional attachments to construction (constructed) materials, the physicality of the built environment and the ways in which we perceive and respond to architectural space. Structure, shelter and permanence are themes that I return to in my work.

Building materials have a particular sensuality and form a relationship to their surroundings in a way unparalleled by traditional artists’ resources. My most recent work is informed by the dialogue between architectural and sculptural forms, using a series of materials collected from places and buildings with which I have a personal connection. I use these to explore ideas of shelter and habitat, my place in my family, and how objects can be vessels to capture memories.

A collaborative project between artists and architects, to propose a piece of public artwork as part of the Amsherkunst Arts Festival in Duisberg, Germany.

2012 Bartlett Travel Scholarship
Funded research trip to New York (USA) as part of an ongoing investigation into different processes we use to navigate / map urban spaces
